Theology Thursday Friday: Surprised or Disappointed by God?

As part of my morning devotional exercises, I have been reading Brother Lawrence's The Practice of the Presence of God: Edited and Paraphrased by Donald Demaray. I had read a translation of the 15th century lay brother's notes several years ago and found it one of the most helpful books in my own spiritual formation. I had this copy on my shelf as well for many years and recently decided to read it.

One of the things that I found fascinating was Brother Lawrence's belief when he joined the monastery that God would punish him for his 'awkwardness.' It was noted in this conversation that Lawrence was a large, clumsy man given to breaking things unintentionally. However, he was surprised to find that God did not punish him, rather Lawrence reports that he was filled with love and joy. This hearkens to a familiar and favorite verse of scripture, written by the Apostle Paul to the Church in Rome:

No condemnation now hangs over the head of those who are "in" Jesus Christ. For the new spiritual principle of life "in" Christ lifts me out of the old vicious circle of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-2 Phillips NT)

What this tells us, and what Lawrence discovered is that God is not interested in punishing us. Rather, Jesus took our punishment on the Cross and now offers His life in exchange for ours. Those of us who are 'in' Christ Jesus, that is, in a right and proper relationship with Him need not fear God's justice and punishment. Like Brother Lawrence, it is easy to find ourselves surprised by God, and our reaction to Him.

This also got me thinking about those people who find themselves disappointed by God. And yes, I believe there are those. Some (not all - please read that carefully) expect that God will bless them materially and physically, and when that doesn't necessarily happen, they are disappointed. When God seems to accept and honor those that they consider less than worthy (trs. less worthy than the person making the judgment), they are disappointed.

These people who are disappointed with Go often want God to conform to their way of thinking, rather than the other way around.

I believe that the difference between being disappointed and being surprised is grounded in the individual's sense of self-hood. Those who are truly humble and recognize God as God, i.e., the One on the throne, the Supreme Creator, Preserver and Governor of all things, they are often surprised because they know how empty, sinful and fallible they are. They expect that God most likely wil barely notice them, or, Like Brother Lawrence, will punish them for their failings. They are surprised because they discover a God who takes pleasure in His creation.
